VOCATIONAL ASSESSMENT & EXPERT WITNESS TESTIMONY IN COLLABORATIVE DIVORCE

Background

Collaborative divorce is a voluntary legal process enabling couples who have decided to separate or end their marriage to work with lawyers and other professionals to achieve a settlement that best meets the specific needs of both parties and their families without contested litigation.

Services

David Goodenough has been delivering vocational assessments and expert witness testimony in collaborative divorce cases for more than 5 years. These assessments cover employment options, compensation potential, as well as necessary training and job search efforts for appropriate career placement, taking into account the unique personality, context, and needs of each individual and family. Based on this assessment, David makes an expert recommendation to be used in financial decisions about the terms of divorce or separation. Additionally, David can facilitate a vocational planning process that enables clients to make realistic choices.

Experience

David has served as an expert witness in collaborative law cases for over 5 years as well as in litigated divorce cases since the 1990s, drawing upon years of experience offering family counseling and expert testimony in legal cases regarding family law issues, child protective services, delinquency prevention, and criminal justice issues. He has undergone extensive official training for these roles and is listed as an Expert Witness through the King County Law Association and Psychology Today websites.

His practical knowledge of what is feasible in the workplace combined with a deep understanding of the emotional and educational foundations necessary to functionally re-enter the workplace enables him to provide significant support and guidance to individuals being assessed. Importantly, David is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and an expert at interpretation of career assessment surveys. He has an extensive background in domestic violence counseling, childhood development, and addiction issues which are often relevant issues in family law cases. His sensitivity to finding solutions that fit for all parties is essential to the positive progression of this type of dissolution process.

LEADERSHIP COACHING

Background

Great leadership is an art form, inspiring enthusiasm and trust, and catalyzing creativity and productivity. Ineffective leadership can negatively impact staff morale and retention, as well as an organization’s bottom line. Yet very few leaders ever receive formal training to prepare them for influential roles. Those who do, and the organizations they serve, report transformational benefits. Indeed, a global survey of coaching clients by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Association Resource Centre, Inc. noted a seven-fold mean return on investment (ROI) for companies investing in coaching, with over 25% reporting an ROI of 10 to 49 times.

Services

We focus on building skills and confidence to allow leaders to be effective and accountable in their roles, helping them safely and honestly examine their strengths and weaknesses and hone their skills. Organizations hire us to help executives and senior-level employees develop specific skills, such as effective listening and delegation, team and meeting management, as well as strategic and tactical goal setting and implementation. We often help individuals and Boards of Directors navigate big changes, such as reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, and changes in leadership personnel. Additionally, we work with individual executives and senior employees to develop their capacity and skills to address discrete, well-defined organizational issues that focus on specific topics or content areas.

Our approach helps individuals risk safely and productively and, ultimately, realize their untapped potential. David Goodenough’s background as a mental health counselor gives him the unique ability to meld rich quantitative and qualitative data together, providing clients with a holistic assessment of the interplay between their personal and professional qualities. He takes a deep dive into each candidate’s character, background, and temperament—something that personality and professional aptitude tests alone cannot do. His sensitive yet direct style challenges clients to address with their issues, confront their fears, and move forward by empowering themselves in their leadership roles and responsibilities.

We offer individual coaching services for individuals, as well as focused workshops and retreats for Boards and teams.

Experience

Steeped in four decades of leadership coaching experience, our approach is tailored each individual and organization’s specific circumstances, needs, self-awareness. We have conducted leadership coaching for multinational corporations and non-profits, government agencies, as well as small and mid-sized firms. We have worked closely with individuals, Boards, and teams within every sector on both multi-year projects and one-day workshops and retreats. /p>

MANAGEMENT CONSULTING

Background

The Goodenough Company provides a range of targeted management consulting services, including troubled employee coaching; assisting with structural re-organizations, layoffs, or individual terminations; succession planning; and team-building. Please Contact Us for more information on the specific services outlined below.

Team-Building

Through team-building, employees build trust, create agreements about common values and goals, and learn how to effectively communicate with one another and to successfully set short and long-term goals. Team members learn how to listen effectively and actively; better understand delegation and monitoring practices; and can more easily manage process improvement. We have led team-building with numerous private and public sector organizations, primarily at the senior management level.

Long-Term Personnel Planning

It is now relatively common to change jobs every few years, and employees are increasingly demanding more rapid development opportunities. High employee turnover can hurt a company’s morale and bottom line; at the same time, a deliberate, planned evolution in staff and leadership can boost morale and productivity enormously. Long-term personnel planning can also include succession planning, which for many reasons can be perceived as threatening or disruptive. Too often executives and Boards do not discuss concrete long-term personnel plans until after a destabilizing event has occurred, resulting in disorderly, rushed action. We help organizations and companies address long-term personnel planning in safe, effective, and thoughtful ways, acknowledging the unique history and personalities of each organization and leadership structure. We also have extensive experience addressing such issues as generational misalignment and founder’s syndrome.

Family-Owned/Closely-Held Businesses

More than 80% of U.S. firms are small to mid-sized, family-owned or closely-held; they provide employment to over half of the country. However, it is also estimated that 2 out of 3 of these businesses will at some point go out of business due to internal disputes among family members and friends. Moreover, while just 30% of family-owned businesses reach the second generation, only 15% reach the third and beyond. The complex dynamics that differentiate a family-owned or closely-held firm from a public corporation are often underappreciated. These businesses are built out of complex personal relationships and histories, which can create unique issues and problems that are different from those experienced in other companies. We appreciate the continuous interplay between the family and work dynamics, which must both be addressed to ensure productivity and long-term viability.

Candidate Lead Assessment

We thoroughly evaluate the workplace environment and interview key members of the leadership team to gain an accurate sense of the culture and existing personality types. Next, we administer a standard series of personality and leadership surveys to each candidate under review. Then, David conducts in-depth, one-on-one interviews with each candidate. In these sessions, David uses his counseling background to assess emotional intelligence, leadership style, decision-making ability, personality type, maturity level and intellectual IQ.

Because of David’s extensive mental-health background, his leadership-coaching experience and his unique approach to hiring, he can help you answer critical questions upfront and eliminate much of the innate risk in making a new hire.

If your company has multiple technically excellent candidates for a position, David’s assessment can help you figure out how each one would fit into your organization and what oversight each would require. Clients can add David’s assessment to their own opinions and make better-informed hiring decisions.
